My Favorite Childhood Book: The Dark Is Rising

My Favorite Childhood Book: The Dark Is Rising
At Massage My Stress Away, I’m not really getting into my childhood much. However, for today’s blog, I’m going to be talking about my favorite childhood book, “The Dark is Rising,” by Susan Cooper.

If I was to describe “The Dark is Rising” to someone, it would be a cross between C.S. Lewis’ The Lion, “The Witch, and the Wardrobe” and “Harry Potter.” There is a little bit of magic, fantasy, and a connection to the never-ending battle between good and evil.

Will is the main character, a soon-to-be member of the Old Ones, who serve as guardians of the earth (so to speak). He is really learning about his power and coming into his own, but he plays a pivotal role in the Light’s battle against the Dark. It’s a book that I still read from time to time as an adult!

In grade school, we would be shown short “trailers” about various books. This particular “trailer” showed a tense exchange between Will and a member of the Dark. I remember thinking, “This is so cool!” I remembered the name of the book, looked it up, and bought a copy.

Everything about it…the imagery, the action, and the lore drew me in. I must admit that my favorite character was Merriman. An odd name – I thought – but everything about him was so awesome!

How did that book shape who I am today? Will was a character who – even though he was a teen – turned out to be a powerful force for the Light. As such, it doesn’t matter if I am a single person or if I am all alone. I can still change the world around me and be a force for good!

The bonus – I discovered later – was that the book was a series: The Dark is Rising Sequence. I remember reading all those books repeatedly, and I still have the series on my bookshelf today!

What childhood book was your favorite? Do you still read it today?
